"Drive” is Ed Sheeran’s most daring sonic pivot to date – a gritty, guitar driven rock anthem that trades his signature acoustic intimacy for full-throttle cinematic energy. Released ahead of F1: The movie, the track was co-written with John Mayer and Blake Slatkin, featuring a powerhouse lineup including Dave Grohl on drums, Pino Palladino on bass along with Rami Jaffee on keys. Sheeran described the song as a “proper driving song” built for the thrill of the race track. The track opens with a pulsing riff crafted by Mayer using an octave panel and builds into a stadium sized chorus with Sheeran’s vocals oscillating between vulnerability plus raw power. Inspired by scenes from the film, Sheeran said the song “fell out of us” in the studio after watching early footage. The track’s anthemic structure and cinematic layering were designed to match the emotional stakes as well as kinetic energy of the film, which stars Brad Pitt as a veteran F1 driver returning to the grid.

The song has been widely praised for its anthemic energy with critics highlighting its stadium sized chorus, gritty guitar work and cinematic build. Co-written with Mayer and Slatkin, featuring Grohl, the track captures the adrenaline as well as the emotional stakes of F1: The Movie with a sound that’s both urgent plus expansive. Directed by Chris Villa, the official music video adds visual horsepower to the track’s momentum. It features Sheeran performing with a custom PRS baritone guitar painted in racing livery, intercut with high-speed F1 footage and stylised shots of Sheeran in motion. The video mirrors the song’s themes of escape, speed and emotional release reinforcing its cinematic intent.
