Barcelona battle: Spanish Grand Prix set for high-speed thrills and championship shake ups

Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya is one of the most technically demanding tracks on the F1 calendar, known for its high-speed corners, abrasive surface and aerodynamic challenges. The removal of the final chicane has restored the circuit’s original fast-flowing layout making turn one is the primary overtaking zone.

The FIA has introduced stricter load tests on front wings, reducing the permitted flex from 15mm to 10mm. Teams like Ferrari and Sauber expect this change to reduce grid gaps, while others may struggle to adapt. The removal of the slow final sector means drivers now approach the main straight at higher speeds, improving overtaking chances into turn one. However, dirty air could still make following difficult.

Oscar Piastri leads the Drivers’ Championship with 161 points but Lando Norris (158 points) and Max Verstappen (136 points) are closing in. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton aim to capitalise on Ferrari’s improved pace with Leclerc targeting after missing out on victory in Monaco. Red Bull’s new floor design aims to improve tyre degradation while McLaren is refining qualifying performance to maximise their advantage on Barcelona’s layout.

Barcelona’s abrasive surface demands careful tyre management with Pirelli selecting the hardest compounds (C1, C2, C3). A two stop strategy is expected with teams favouring medium-medium-soft or medium-soft-soft approaches. As the final race of the European triple header, Barcelona will set the tone for the championship battle with teams assessing their development direction for the upcoming rounds.
